"No..."
The girl dropped the phone. She stood in place for a moment before taking off down the stairs and out of the house without stopping to properly close the front door. She ran as fast as her feet could take her. Her long dark brown hair flew behind her as the rain pelted down upon her head. Her eyes were wild with fear.
She ran a few blocks and finally could hear sirens in the distance. Police and ambulance lights were flashing up ahead. The girl's heart beat so quickly she thought it might give out at any moment. Her pace quickened and she ran as if her own life depended on it.
Faster! Faster! I have to run faster! Dear God, please don't let him be...
The girl screeched to a halt. A black sports car was smashed into a tree nearby. Between that car and tree, however, was a familiar red bike with white wings painted on the bars. Then the girl noticed police officers and men dressed in blue suits huddled together around something.
It was a stretcher. As the stretcher was being lifted up into the ambulance, the girl saw the face of the black haired boy lying upon it.
"No..."
He did not move.
"No."
His hand lifelessly flopped around over the side of the stretcher as he and it entered the ambulance.
"No!"
The girl could not move. Her heart was bursting with disbelief, sorrow, and fear.
"Shinichi!!!" the girl screamed as she stood there in the rain that merged with her own newly formed tears.
The ambulance doors shut with a deadened thud that signaled the end. The ambulance drove off quickly down the road engulfed in gray and rain. The crowd that had formed began to slowly disperse and find shelter from the rain.
The girl stood alone. Unable to move; unable to feel. She was numb. The freezing rain could not even penetrate to her heart.
This can't be happening. This must be some horrible nightmare. I'll wake up any minute now.
It was not a nightmare. She would never wake up.
Everything was gray. Everything seemed so lifeless - so dead. It was if all the happiness in the world had suddenly disappeared for forever.
He can't be dead. He just can't...

Almost a week passed when the funeral occured. It had rained mercilessly that day. However, the girl was forced to go back to school and continue with her studies. She did her best to concentrate on that, but she just could not. Her heart led her mind astray. The girl just could not bear life without Shinichi.
Her grades began to fall little by little, but did not fall past a B-. She had lost interest in many of the things she loved to do - especially the activites that Shinichi had participated in with her. Every poem, story, artwork, or song she wrote was filled with pain, heartbreak, suffering, and loneliness. Nothing could bring her back to the way she way because her heart was no longer there. She had lost her heart the day Shinichi died.
The last quarter began - it was early spring. The girl's only change in her block scheduling was that she now had physical education at the end of the day. She went to the girls' locker room, changed, and made her way to the basketball court. The boys' locker room was closer, so almost all of the guys in her class were there already.
A blackish - brown haired boy walked up tp the girl with a smile on his lightly freckled face. His light brown eyes sparkled with genuine joy at seeing the girl. He was Shinichi's closest friend: Tadaaki.
Ever since the death of Shinichi, Tadaaki had gotten closer to the girl. He had done so because he knew that was what Shinichi would have wanted. He had to protect and cheer up the girl Shinichi cared so much about when Shinichi could no longer do that himself. Tadaaki was a true and loyal friend even after having lost his friend. He was the reason the girl had not flunked in any of her classes. He persisted in getting her to live her life and keep working hard. Tadaaki would not let her ruin the rest of her life.
Over time, the two became really close. The girl only saw Tadaaki as a friend, but Tadaaki developed feelings far above friendship for the girl. He felt guilty about it and did not pursue his feelings. Tadaaki was torn between his friendship with Shinichi and his newfound love for the girl Shinichi had loved.
Ever so slowly, the girl noticed little by little Tadaaki's feelings for her without realizing it. She saw the moments when his eyes flickered a strong longing for her and then guilt for even thinking that. She noticed all the times Tadaaki would move his hand closer to hers or hug her a little tighter, but then he would clench his hand or push himself away quickly.
What's wrong with him?
The girl did her best to find him a good girlfriend without realizing how much more pain she caused him in doing so. Finally, he actually went out on a date with one of her friends who was willing to date him.
Shinichi and the friend became a couple and went on some more dates, but the girl was starting to feel jealous and lonely. It dawned on her how much time Tadaaki had spent with her on a daily basis now that he was so preoccupied with his new girlfriend. He usually was the only one who would sit with her just to keep her company, but now there was no one there beside her.
Desperate, the girl went in search for Tadaaki when he did not show up during their lunch period. She ran all over the school's campus only to stop and catch her breath behind the performing arts building. It was then that she saw Tadaaki leaning on a pillar out of sight from prying eyes. She opened her mouth to joyfully cry out his name, but then she froze when she saw her friend, who she introduced him to, wrap her arms around Tadaaki and kiss him.
A sharp pain exploded in the girl's heart and would not disperse. She clutched her chest. It was hard to breathe. Her eyes were filling with tears. She touched her head and tried to get control over herself.
What in the world is wrong with me?! I introduced her to Tadaaki so that he could be happy with a girlfriend. I want him to be happy, but why does is hurt so much to see them together? This is wrong! This is all wrong!!! I love Shinichi!
The girl stole a glance back at Tadaaki and her friend kissing. The pain in her heart doubled. She wrenched her eyes away from Tadaaki and her friend. The girl dropped to her knees and began to cry without making any sounds for fear that Tadaaki would hear them. For fear that Shinichi would realize her betrayal.
No. I can't do this to Shinichi. Shinichi, I'm so sorry. Are you watching me right now? Do you know the traitorous feelings that my heart is holding? I'm so sorry, Shinichi. If only you were here now... If only you were with me... If only you were alive...
The girl was brought back to earth by a simple tap on the shoulder. She spun around in surprise as tears detached themselved from her eyelashes and cheeks.
It was Tadaaki who had tapped her shoulder.
The girl quickly turned her face away from him. He had looked shocked.
Oh, God. What now? He saw my face. He'll ask me why I'm crying. If I tell him the truth, he'll hate me for betraying Shinichi. But can I lie to Tadaaki?
Tadaaki grabbed the girl by her shoulder and jerked her around to face him. Concern and worry was written all over his face.
"What's wrong? Why are you crying?"
The girl opened her mouth to say something, but she could not find the words. She was afraid and torn. More tears formed and fell from her eyes as Tadaaki tried to procure the answer to it all from her. The girl shut her eyes tightly as if it would help her stop time and block out the awkward scene.
Shinichi!!! Please, tell me what should I do! Please!
She opened her eyes abruptly and thought she was seeing things when she saw Shinichi standing behind Tadaaki. Shinichi wore a white shirt and white pants. His eyes resembled those of a child who was about to willingly give away his favorite thing in the world to someone else even though it hurt him. He smiled a small encouraging smile to the girl he loved.
Shinichi? What? But how?
Shinichi gestured toward Tadaaki and nodded.
Are you saying it's ok for me to love him?
Shinichi's smile grew a bit wider as he nodded.
Shinichi...thank you.
The girl smiled as her tears became ones of relief and joy. She closed her eyes again, but when she opened them this time, Shinichi was gone. She smiled even more as she looked up to the sky and then back to the confused Tadaaki.
"I'm sorry, Tadaaki. I'm sorry I forced you to go out with my friend." The girl wiped away the last of her tears.
"What? What are you saying?" Tadaaki's grip loosened.
The girl took a deep breath and smiled with hope in her eyes and voice as she laughed, "I'm saying that I love you!"
Tadaaki froze. He could not believe the words he was hearing. Shinichi's girl was telling him that she loved him. His heart screamed for him to return her calling, but then he thought of Shinichi.
Shinichi's girl...
Tadaaki lowered his gazed and pulled his arms and hands away from the girl. He was about to tell her that he could not accept her feelings when something smacked him from the back of the head. Tadaaki turned to see what it was and was shocked to find that it was a rubber ball identical to the one that Shinichi always played with when the boys were litte.
Shinichi...? Are you telling me not to reject her?
"Hey, butthead! Pass back my ball!"
A boy that looked almost exactly like a younger version of Shinichi waved to Tadaaki as he yelled out more mean names like moron and idiot.
Tadaaki grinned.
Well, okay, Shinichi. I can take a hint.
Tadaaki threw back the ball and the kid laughed as he ran off into the distance. Tadaaki then turned to the girl who simply stared at him waiting for an answer with a not-so-confident smile on her face. Tadaaki smiled.
"I was afraid that Shinichi would not like this..." The girl looked worried. "but it seems he thinks I"m a butthead for not saying it." The girl's eyes sparkled with renewed hope once more.
"I love you."
